Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (PSA) has undertaken a wide range of sustainable transportation programs that contribute significantly to the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These initiatives reflect a strong institutional commitment to low-carbon mobility, the reduction of air pollution, and the creation of safe, inclusive, and accessible transport systems.
Key programs include:
Public Transport Campaigns: A series of campaigns organized for the polytechnic community to encourage students and staff to use public transport as their primary commuting option. With available facilities such as buses, trains, and accessible e-hailing services, the polytechnic community is encouraged to shift their daily mobility habits toward a more sustainable lifestyle.
Carpooling Campaigns: Initiatives to reduce traffic congestion within the campus area, lower daily transportation costs, and minimize carbon emissions.
Guidelines for Pedestrian Pathways and Micromobility Vehicle Lanes: Developed to promote a healthy lifestyle among the PSA community by providing facilities that support walking and the use of micromobility vehicles as part of daily activities. This initiative also supports Smart Green policies at institutional, national, and international levels in line with the SDGs.
Integrated Pedestrian Pathways and Micromobility Lanes: Development of connected pedestrian networks and dedicated shared lanes across campus to encourage non-motorized transport.
10,000 Steps a Day and Park & Walk Campaigns: Programs designed to promote walking within the campus and encourage a healthy, active lifestyle among the PSA community.
Vehicle Usage Guidelines for Carbon Reduction: Developed to decrease carbon emissions by encouraging the use of more efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles.
Energy-Efficient Vehicle Specifications for Carbon Reduction: Initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint of the transportation sector by promoting efficient, clean, and sustainable vehicles.
Installation of Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations: Planned to support the transition toward cleaner and more sustainable transportation alternatives.
Vehicle Restriction Policy: Implementation of a policy that includes providing vehicle stickers and limiting parking permits for students and staff to control on-campus traffic and emissions.
Integration with Public Transportation Systems: Collaboration to enhance accessibility through campus bus terminals and last-mile shuttle services.
Collaboration with Authorities: Joint efforts with the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), Public Works Department (JKR), and RapidKL to align PSA’s mobility strategies with broader city transport plans.
These efforts directly support SDGs 3, 4, 7, 9, 11, 12, 13, and 17, and contribute indirectly to others, including:
· SDG 3 – Reducing exposure to air pollution and promoting healthy, active lifestyles
· SDG 4 – Ensuring inclusive access to education through safe and reliable campus transport
· SDG 7 – Promoting the use of clean energy in transportation
· SDG 9 – Supporting innovation in sustainable transport infrastructure
· SDG 11 – Building inclusive, safe, and sustainable urban mobility systems
· SDG 12 – Encouraging responsible use of resources through shared mobility
· SDG 13 – Lowering carbon emissions through low-impact transportation
· SDG 17 – Strengthening partnerships to develop integrated, sustainable transport networks
