The Low Carbon Cities 2030 Challenge (LCC2030C) is a Malaysian initiative by the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) under the Ministry of Environment and Water (KASA) to accelerate the transition to low-carbon urban environments. It focuses on reducing carbon emissions in key areas like urban environments, infrastructure, transportation, and buildings within Malaysian cities. The programme encourages local authorities and communities to commit to significant carbon emission reductions by 2030.
Objective:
The primary goal is to reduce carbon emissions in Malaysian cities, aligning with Malaysia's commitment to a 45% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
Focus Areas:
The challenge addresses carbon emissions in four main areas:
Urban Environment: This includes initiatives related to green spaces, waste management, and resource efficiency.
Urban Infrastructure: This focuses on energy-efficient buildings, smart grids, and sustainable infrastructure development.
Urban Transportation: This promotes the adoption of sustainable transportation options like public transport, cycling, and walking.
Buildings: This encourages energy-efficient building designs and retrofits.
Participation:
The programme invites local authorities and communities to participate by committing to specific carbon reduction targets and implementing low-carbon strategies.
Benefits of Participation:
Participating cities and organisations can expect to enhance their reputation in climate action, improve efficiency in city operations, and future-proof their cities against climate change impacts.
MGTC's Role:
The Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) is the key driver of the LCC2030C, working to establish low-carbon zones and support participating cities.
