Conservation of plants, animals, wildlife, and genetic resources for food and agriculture is crucial for sustaining biodiversity, ensuring food security, and supporting ecological balance. At Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (PSA), these resources can be preserved in either medium-term or long-term conservation facilities, such as seed banks, gene banks, controlled-environment greenhouses, and animal breeding centers. Medium-term conservation allows for the temporary preservation of seeds, plant tissues, or livestock breeds for research, breeding, or educational purposes, while long-term facilities, like cryogenic storage or gene banks, ensure the protection of genetic material for future generations.
By maintaining these resources, PSA can contribute to research and development in agriculture, forestry, and biotechnology, supporting sustainable production practices and resilience against climate change. Conservation also allows students and researchers to study rare or endangered species, understand genetic diversity, and develop innovative approaches to crop and livestock improvement. Additionally, safeguarding wildlife and genetic resources aligns with global efforts under SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land), ensuring that natural and agricultural resources remain available for both present and future generations while promoting ecological sustainability on campus.
