Medical Laboratory Technologist 

A Medical Laboratory Technician is a professional laboratory technician who is responsible for planning, conducting, and summarizing each medical test that is carried out in the pathology or medical laboratory. These tests may include blood, tissue, or other body fluids. Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs) are critical members of a medical team and are accountable for providing accurate data to physicians for analyzing the physical condition of the patient. In this field, a technician may specialize in one or more aspects of medical tests, such as haematology, microbiology, immunology, endocrinology, nephrology, parasitology, and many others. Examples of such tests include blood tests, urine tests, vitamin tests, and so on.

Medical laboratory technicians provide assistance to physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases by conducting tests on tissue, blood, and other bodily fluids. They are primarily employed in hospitals or medical practices. Their duties include performing chemical analyses of body fluids, such as blood or urine, using a microscope or automatic analyzer to detect abnormalities or diseases, and entering their findings into a computer. They also analyze the results of tests or experiments to ensure conformity to specifications, using special mechanical or electrical devices. Additionally, they are responsible for setting up, maintaining, calibrating, cleaning, and testing the sterility of medical laboratory equipment. They prepare standard volumetric solutions or reagents to be combined with samples, following standardized formulas or experimental procedures. They collect blood or tissue samples from patients, observing principles of asepsis to obtain a blood sample, and supervise or instruct other technicians or laboratory assistants. They conduct blood tests for transfusion purposes and perform blood counts. They obtain specimens, cultivate, isolate, and identify microorganisms for analysis, examine cells stained with dye to locate abnormalities, and consult with a pathologist to determine a final diagnosis when abnormal cells are found. They cut, stain, and mount tissue samples for examination by pathologists, perform medical research to further control or cure disease, and analyze and record test data to issue reports that use charts, graphs, or narratives.

Prospective students may pursue 12-Science, with a recommendation for Biology. Upon completion, they may proceed to obtain a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technician (BMLT) degree. Subsequently, they may further their education by pursuing a Master of Medical Laboratory Technician (MMLT) degree. Additionally, students may opt to pursue a B.Sc in Medical Lab Technology, followed by a PG Diploma in Medical Lab Technology.
