The Indian Economic Service (IES) is a Group A Central Service that provides economic expertise to the government and helps in economic reforms and policy-making. The Cadre Controlling Authority of the IES is located in the Ministry of Finance (Department of Economic Affairs). IES officers work in a broad spectrum of fields, such as finance, rural development, education, health, agriculture, industry, trade, transport, and IT.

There are two career paths to become an IES officer:

• Career Path 1:

  • 12th Maths

  • Bachelor of Arts in Economics/ Applied Economics

  • Master of Arts in Economics/ Applied Economics

  • Post Graduate UPSC IES examination

• Career Path 2:

  • 12th Maths

  • Bachelors in economics/statistics

  • Masters in economics/statistics

  • Post Graduate UPSC IES examination

Both paths require a strong foundation in mathematics and economics.
