Audiologists are professionals who possess the technical expertise to diagnose hearing-related ailments. It is imperative to note that they are distinct from ear specialists such as ENT practitioners. Audiologists are equipped with advanced instruments that enable them to diagnose hearing problems, but they are not authorized to perform medical ear surgeries. The primary responsibility of an audiologist is to identify the underlying cause of a patient's hearing impairment or complete loss of hearing.

Conduct hearing tests and perform patient examinations to gather information on the type and severity of hearing impairment, utilizing specialized instruments and electronic equipment. Dispense, fit, and repair assistive devices, such as hearing aids. Maintain comprehensive patient records throughout all stages of evaluation and treatment. Evaluate hearing and balance disorders to determine diagnoses and develop treatment plans. Program and monitor cochlear implants to meet the individual needs of patients. Provide counseling and instruction to patients and their families on techniques to improve hearing and communication related to hearing loss. Refer patients to additional medical or educational services as necessary. Monitor patients' progress and provide ongoing observation of hearing or balance status. Educate and supervise audiology students and healthcare personnel. Instruct patients, parents, teachers, or employers in communication strategies to optimize effective receptive communication. Recommend assistive devices based on patients' needs or the nature of their impairments. Participate in conferences or training to remain up-to-date on new hearing or balance disorder treatment methods or technologies. Develop and implement treatment programs for patients' hearing or balance problems, consulting with educators, physicians, nurses, psychologists, speech-language pathologists, and other healthcare personnel as needed. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to assess and rehabilitate recipients of implanted hearing devices through auditory training and counseling. Advise educators or other medical staff on hearing or balance-related topics.

The student has the option to pursue 12th grade in the Science Stream. Upon completion, they may proceed to obtain a Bachelor of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology. Subsequently, they may further their education by pursuing a Master of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in Audiology.

Alternatively, the student may choose to complete a Diploma in Audiology and Speech Rehabilitation after 12th grade in the Science Stream. They may then proceed to obtain a Master of Audiology and Speech Rehabilitation, followed by a Ph.D. in Audiology. Another option is to pursue a PG Diploma in Audiology and Speech Rehabilitation before proceeding to a Ph.D. in Audiology.
