By Jennifer Pena
When I was in elementary school, I was young and I had a lot of friends, some of them would talk about what they wanted to be when they grew up, and all I heard was “ I want to be a police officer” , “ I want to be a lawyer”, etc.. and all i thought of was “What will i be when i grow up”. There is so many things a person can pick out of all the categories. Professional workers came to see us and talk about how they do their jobs and how they manage dangerous things on specific things.
Furthermore as the day went on, a firefighter came and talked to us about how a fire would get so strong and it would be dangerous if a person would get close to it, or even by it. The strong smell of the fire going through the whole building the firefighters told us. The next person I remember that came to talk to us about their jobs was a Police Officer. He told us how hard it was to be a cop but how they also loved their job because of the many exciting things they got to do. I also remember how he said that it’s hard to carry the gun and I've seen how he had all this heavy equipment with him, like all around him. He also said to us that it’s hard for him because he would be in difficult situations when he heard loud gunshots. The day went on with the other people speaking to us about their professions. We had to think about what we most liked about today and also think about what we would want to be when we grew up.
In the end, I thought of it and I honestly didn’t know what to do or wanted to do back then. We were young and thought that everything was a joke or more like a game, but it’s really important for me now because the profession that i want to study now is to be an Orthopedic. I have been learning and constantly developing new skills through my years of being in school and listening and watching people do their jobs. I have to take action on what I would like to do as my profession. Whether I want to study that profession or not, I would like to take action not only physically but mentally on what i would love to do.
In the essay “My Decision” Jennifer Pena attracts our attention by focusing on how she has all these other people making decisions and talking about what they would want to be when they are older, and all of that makes her think of what she will do next. The main message of this piece would be to always take action on what you believe is best for you. She made her writing more vivid by including what she wanted to do mentally and physically and taking action.
She organized her writing by setting the paragraphs well in three sections that would be beginning, middle and end. It began by explaining how she was in elementary school and how everyone would talk about what they would like to be when they grew up. The text structure that she used is keeping the story of how she was in elementary kind of going till she got to the middle of the story. She ended the paragraph by inserting "lastly" in the first sentence in order for us to know that it will be her last piece of writing.
The most important phrase in the story that i liked was “ I have to take action on what i would like to do as my profession.” I liked it because one does have to take action on what they believe it would be best for them. I didn’t use any literary devices on this piece of writing. The tone words for this writing would be determined and ponder, the tone for ponder would be in the first paragraph and for determines it would be in the last paragraph. The two tones words are both different because "ponder" would be another word for thinking and not being sure on what you want, and "determined" would be decided and for that you already know what you want.
The purpose for this writing was for the author Jennifer, as in myself, to always believe in herself and even if the time passes really fast no one will take what you believe away from you.
In this essay when can see how it represents how people decide what to be when they grow up, I like when she said that all their friends already knew what they wanted to be but she didn't, this happens to a lot of people. Some people take some time to look for what they want to be, personally I really like this essay and I like when says "I have been learning and constantly developing new skills through my years of being in school and listening and watching people do their jobs" because I think is important that everyone learns things from other people like their jobs or try to get some help with someone that works on what you want to be and ask how did he or she did it. This essay makes me think what I want to be, because some people may have many options just like me but I have to look what can be the best option for me.
