Pan (Panas) and Syrigx (Syringa)
Who was Pan?
How did he create his musical instrument?
Who was Pan?
How did he create his musical instrument?
Pan was the god of forests and fields, with goat's feet and horns. He liked to play his flute and dance with the nymphs of the forest.
One day, Pan saw the nymph Syringa and immediately fell in love with her. But Syrix was afraid of Pan and ran away.
Syrix ran swiftly through the forest, and when Pan came too close, she prayed to the river nymphs for help.
The nymphs answered her prayer and transformed her into reeds.
When Pan reached the river, he saw the reeds and realized what had happened. With regret and respect, he cut some of the reeds and tied them together,
creating the first syringe, a musical instrument that made sweet sounds. From then on, Pan played his syringe, filling the forest with beautiful music.
