Orpheus and Eurydice
A love that was beyond death.
Let's look at the tragic story of the couple.
Orpheus
In the beautiful land of Thrace, in ancient Greece, there lived an exceptional musician named Orpheus. Orpheus was the son of Oiagros, King of Thrace, and Calliope, one of the Muses who inspired art and music. Orpheus was known for his wonderful music, which enchanted people and animals, and even the trees leaned over to listen to his melody.
Eurydice
Orpheus was very fond of Eurydice, a beautiful nymph with golden hair and eyes that shone like stars. Eurydice was the daughter of Apollo, god of light and music, and the nymph Clymene.
The wedding
Orpheus and Eurydice were married and lived happily ever after, until one day something very sad happened.
The evil
Eurydice, while walking in the forest, was bitten by a poisonous snake and died.
The decision
Orpheus was inconsolable. He could not accept that his beloved Eurydice was gone forever. So he decided to descend to the Underworld, where Hades and Persephone reigned, to bring her back.
In the Underworld
With his lyre in his hands, Orpheus began to play the saddest and most beautiful music ever heard.
Hades
The spirits of the Underworld stopped to listen, and even stern Hades was moved.
Persephone
Orpheus' music touched the heart of Persephone, the Queen of the Underworld, and she was persuaded to give him a chance to bring Eurydice back.
The term
Hades told Orpheus that Eurydice could return with him to the upper world, on one condition: that Orpheus should not look back to see Eurydice until they reached daylight.
The ascent to the Upper World
Orpheus and Eurydice began their ascent from the Underworld. Orpheus walked ahead, and Eurydice followed behind him. The journey was long and difficult, but Orpheus never stopped playing his favorite music to keep their courage up.
The doubt
When they finally arrived almost at the exit, Orpheus, full of impatience and doubt, could not bear it and looked back to make sure Eurydice was still there. But as soon as his eyes met hers, Eurydice began to disappear, like a thin cloud dissipating in the wind. Eurydice disappeared into the Underworld forever.
The ending
Orpheus, full of sorrow, returned to the upper world alone. Since then he continued to play his melodic lyre, but his music was always full of sadness and nostalgia for his beloved Eurydice.
