Another storm
So they went south. The sea was calm and the wind was calm. But they had no time to rejoice and suddenly a wild Thracian north wind began to blow and push them as if it wanted to crush them on the mountains. And the sea raised mountains of waves to swallow them up.
In Africa
For days and nights they struggled with the storm, until it threw them onto other shores. These were other places, the wind was warm, the sun was hot. They were in Africa now. They went out on the shore to rest and find fresh water. They'd been dead from fatigue and sea-fighting for so many days.
Three comrades in the Lotus-eaters
Odysseus sent three of his companions to find water, to fetch it and to see what kind of people lived in those places. He waited an hour, two hours, a day, two days, but his companions did not return.
Then he set out alone, with a few companions, to go and find them.
The Lotus effect
When he arrived in a village, he saw them sitting with the locals and chatting. He greeted them, spoke to them, but they did not know him. They had eaten lotus and had forgotten who they were and where they were going. He invited them to go with him, but they did not follow him.
Departure from the Loto-eaters
Then he took them by force, and brought them into the ship. There he tied them up, because they were crying and wanted to go back to the Lothofagus, and he commanded them to hoist the sails quickly, to leave the cursed land, the land of Lysmonia.
