The Trojans begin to win
And the war started again, more savage.
The soldiers on both sides fought like lions. But this time the Trojans were victorious and chased the Greeks as far as their ships. In this battle Diomedes, Odysseus and Nestor were wounded. And had it not been for Ajax, fighting like a god, the Trojans would have burned the ships of the Greeks. Finally, night fell and the Trojans turned back.
The attitude of Achilles
At night Agamemnon could not sleep a wink. He bitterly regretted that he had insulted the best lad of the Greeks and now the Trojans were winning. So he woke up Odysseus and Nestor and sent them to Achilles to tell him that he would give him back Briseis and other rich gifts and go out to fight again. The kings went and told him, but Achilles' anger would not soften.
The request of Patroclus
The next morning the Trojans reached the Greek ships again. Then Patroclus begged Achilles to give him his army and weapons and let him fight. "I cannot see the Greeks defeated, the best leaders of the Greeks have been wounded," he said sadly.
- Patroclus, I love no one more than you and I don't want to spoil your joy, Achilles said to him. But I advise you not to go too far into the plain.
Patroclus enters the battle
Happy Patroclus took the Myrmidons and went out to battle. When the Trojans saw him, they mistook him for Achilles and began to retreat. Patroclus forgot Achilles' advice. He was thrilled with the victory and joined the Greeks in hunting down and killing the Trojans.
The death of Patroclus
But Patroclus forgot what Achilles had told him, and fought his way to the walls of Troy. But there was Hector, who was left outside the walls. So as soon as he saw him, he swooped up like a hawk. A terrible fight began, but soon Patroclus lay dead, pierced by Hector's spear.
Hector takes the weapons of Achilles
He then succeeded the henchman of the Trojans and took the armour of Achilles. He wanted to take Patroclus' body as well, but the Greeks rushed in, took it and brought it to Achilles.
When Achilles saw his beloved friend dead, he fell on his body and cried loudly. He spilled ashes in his hair and rolled down to the earth.
- "Why did you not listen to me, Patroclus," he said, shedding bitter tears beside the sea, which also waved as if in mourning.
