In the land of the Laestrygonians
For six days and nights Odysseus and his companions struggled and sea-swam until they saw an island in the distance. Torn as they were, they praised the gods, for they would be spared again, and set out for their unknown island.
Odysseus sends for exploration
All the ships entered the port they found in front of them, only Odysseus tied his own at the entrance. He then sent three of his companions to see what people lived on the island and to take, if they could, food and water.
In the city of the Laestrygonians
The three walked through the beach, but they saw no people, until they came to a town. They went in and then they were frightened. What savage men were those who surrounded them! Godlike, giant-like right, they seized them like feathers and carried them to their king's palace. They put them in a great hall where there was no one.
Before the King
Soon their king, a mighty wild man, came and sat down on his throne. He asked them who they were and what they wanted. One began to tell him their story and their sufferings, lest he should have pity on them. But he, before he could finish, seized one, knocked him down, killed him, and began to eat him.
The two return to the boats
Terrified, the other two started running like crazy. Even they didn't understand how they got to the boats. But even the King of the Laestrygonians didn't sit back and wait. He made some wild cries that gathered all the Lystrygons in an instant and ran to the harbor.
Odysseus loses many companions
There they seized the huge stone stones that were on the beach and began to break the ships and kill Odysseus' companions. Odysseus' ship, which was some distance away, barely escaped. Those who were left got into it and, quickly pulling an oar, pulled away and escaped.
So there was only one ship left, and Odysseus and a few of his companions.
