Ida - Marpissa
Who are they? What does their story have to do with the name of the river Euin?
Who are they? What does their story have to do with the name of the river Euin?
In a beautiful land full of green mountains and clear lakes, there lived a brave young man, Ida. He was known for his great strength and courage. Ida and his brother, Lygeus, had many adventures and were always ready to help people.
One day, Ida saw a beautiful girl, Marpissa, daughter of King Eunus. Marpissa was so beautiful that many men wanted to marry her, but her father, King Euin, did not want to marry her to anyone. So he set a difficult condition: anyone who wanted to marry Marpissa had to beat him in a horse race.
Ida, with the help of the god Poseidon, got a magic chariot that could fly in the sky. With this chariot, he managed to grab Marpissa and fly away, soaring high above the mountains and rivers.
But as he could not reach them, Eunus fell into despair and fell into the river. From then on, the river was named Euinos in his honour.
As Ida and Marpissa flew away, the god Apollo, who was also in love with Marpissa, chased them.
Zeus, seeing the commotion, intervened and said that Marpissa had to choose for herself who she wanted as her husband.
Marpissa thought deeply and wisely. She chose Ida because she feared that Apollo, being immortal, would leave her alone as she grew old. Ida was mortal and would live his life beside her.
Thus, Ida and Marpissa lived happily together, with Ida's strength and courage and Marpissa's beauty and wisdom guiding them. Their adventures became legends and their love became an example to all who heard their story.
