William Lister

William Charles Lister was apprenticed to Reg Day and had his first rides in 1919. He rode his first winner in 1920.

He rode three big cup winners during the early 1920s: the 1921 Doncaster Cup and the 1922 Goodwood Cup on Flamboyant, and the 1924 Stewards Cup on Compiler.

Later in 1924 he moved to France to ride for Jean Stern and was quite successful there. He also rode on and off in Egypt. He was back riding in Britain in the early 1930s and late 1940s.

Based in Newmarket, in 1949 he rode five winners from 108 rides, the last of them on 6-4 favourite Flower Dust in a two-year-old fillies’ maiden at Catterick on October 19.

He had his final ride in Britain on Aer Lingus II (unplaced) at Birmingham on November 1, 1949.

In January 1950 he left for South Africa with his English-born wife to continue his career there.
