By September, 1921, William Lister had lost his 5lb claim - and, consequently many of his rides to another young apprentice, Charlie Elliott - but still managed to boot home Flamboyant at Manchester in the Prince Edward Handicap on Saturday September 3.
Just six days later, Flamboyant gave William his first big winner when running away with the Doncaster Gold Cup, Friday September 9.

The 1922 Goodwood Cup was run on Friday 27 July. Flamboyant and William ran out comfortable winners.

One that got away. 1923
Riding at Le Touquet in 1928, William, then first jockey to M. Jean Stern, rode three consecutive winners, one of them being Rialto in the Grand Prix du Touquet, a flat race valued at £1,000.
