David Lewis

David John Lewis rode one winner over jumps when Commissary won the Westgate Hurdle (Division 1) at Warwick on March 3, 1962. It was the first time that he had partnered the six-year-old which was usually ridden by another young jockey, Barry Brown.

It was a close run thing, not in the race itself, for Commissary won unchallenged by eight lengths, but in its timing. The third race on the card, it only just beat the weather, the remaining three races having to be abandoned due to a heavy snowstorm.

Trained by permit holder Walter Burchell, Commissary finished unplaced in his two subsequent starts which, along with the Warwick victory, comprised David’s only three rides that season. He did not renew his licence thereafter, but at least he had won a race.

Ten years after that solitary success, David returned to the fray, taking out a licence for the 1972/73 campaign, based with Warwickshire trainer Alan Jarvis. However, he had very few opportunities. He renewed his licence for one more season and had his final ride when finishing eighth of twelve runners on Hocket in the Nailsworth Opportunity Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham on October 10, 1973.
