Born in 1877, National Hunt jockey Thomas Lunn, known as ‘Tot’, held a licence to ride on the Flat for several years in the late 19th and early 20th century but never managed a winner. He fared slightly better over jumps with two wins from just as few rides in 1903.

His first success came at Shincliffe on May 13, when Deskrie won the Durham Chase. The four-year-old was running for the first time over obstacles and beat Glen-Rake, the mount of Harry Taylor, by three-quarters of a length.

Tot’s other winner was Blackbird, who won a match for the Wilford Chase at Nottingham on October 26. Tot brought the four-year-old home three lengths in front of Henry Brown on Brundish.

Blackbird was owned by Charles Bower Ismay, whose horse Craganour was destined to be controversially disqualified after finishing first past the post in the infamous 1913 ‘Suffragette’ Derby.

Blackbird may well have been Thomas Lunn’s last ride in England. He died in 1964.
