Thomas Lane

1873 - 1918

National Hunt jockey Thomas Lane rode mainly in Ireland where he was champion jockey. However, he also recorded a total of 26 winners over jumps in Britain.

He had his first ride in Britain when pulling up his mount Idalus in the Mapperley Handicap Chase at Nottingham on December 14, 1897. It didn’t take him long to achieve his first British success, that coming on Bohemian Boy the following month in the Moseley Selling Handicap Hurdle at Birmingham on January 29, 1898.

He had just one ride in the Grand National, aboard 20-1 chance Barcalwhey in 1900. They fell at the 16th fence, the water jump.

Thomas enjoyed his most successful British season in 1902 with nine wins. He finished second in that year’s Grand International Hurdle at Gatwick on Maori Queen II.

Back in Ireland, he was twice placed in the Irish Grand National, finishing second on Morning Dawn in 1899 and third on Kinlough in 1905.

He rode for the last time in Britain at Manchester’s 1908 New Year meeting. On New Year’s Day he was the recipient of a walkover for the Peel Park Selling Hurdle on Tarpon. Having exerted no undue energy in walking over, Thomas was reunited with Tarpon the following day, coming second, beaten a neck, in the Juvenile (4yo) Selling Hurdle. He had two more mounts later that afternoon, finishing second on Arab in the Thursday Selling Handicap Hurdle and then falling on Avebury in the Trafford Handicap Hurdle.

Thomas Lane died in 1918.
