Jackie Lynn

1876-1938

John ‘Jackie’ Lynn was born at Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford, Ireland in 1876. Having came into racing via Larry Hope’s Enfield stable, he rode his first winner in 1903 and finished second, beaten three-quarters of a length, in the 1904 Irish Grand National Le Petit Pere.

He finished third on Patlander in the 1907 Grand National at Aintree, by which time he was established as one of Ireland’s leading jump jockeys. He achieved his greatest victory when winning the 1916 Irish Grand National on All Sorts, trained by Dick Cleary at Streamstown, Mullingar.

Jackie carried on riding in races until he was over 50. Unable to earn a living due to ill-health thereafter, he died in reduced circumstances of cancer on 7 December 1938, aged 62.

He was the brother of jockey William Lynn, who was killed in a fall at Gowran Park in 1919. He was also the father of National Hunt jockey Mickey Lynn, who died following a fall at Sandown Park in 1955.
