Peter Leando was originally apprenticed to veteran trainer Mrs Louie Dingwall, based at Poole, in Dorset. He had his first ride for her at Worcester on May 12, 1972, when unplaced on Parsnip in the Newton Novices’ Hurdle (Division 2).

He also had a few rides on the Flat, the last of which was when unplaced on Flying Footsteps at Bath on September 22, 1975. As her had already ridden over jumps by then he was not entitled to claim an apprentice allowance under the rules in force at that time. Shortly afterwards he walked out on Mrs Dingwall. Consequently, as he had to be apprenticed to a trainer in order to ride as a conditional jockey over jumps, his licence was withdrawn on October 9, 1975.

He had his first win at Devon & Exeter on October 8, 1977, when Head Gear, owned and trained by Gibbons, just got the better of Waltzer, the mount of Martin Ayliffe, to take the Charminster Handicap Hurdle. The pair had finished third on their first start together at the same course nine days earlier. Peter kept the ride but could manage only one third placed from four outings. He had over 30 rides during that 1977/78 campaign but did not add to his total.
He eventually returned, based this time with Ian Gibbons at Okehampton, in Devon.
