Joseph Lancelotte

Joseph Lancelotte

Despite being placed twice in his first three rides, apprentice Joseph Fleet Lancelotte did not make progress, his career lasting less than a year.

Apprenticed to the stable of William Waugh at Kingsclere, Joseph had his first ride on the Duke of Westminster’s four-year-old gelding Superior, finishing seventh of 13 in the Apprentices’ Plate at Newmarket on July 1, 1916.

It was on his second ride, again at Newmarket, on July 19 that he came closest to winning when his mount Przemysl, owned by the Duke of Portland, was beaten a head in the Maiden Apprentice Three-Year-Old Plate.

A third-place finish on his third ride followed when Przemysl was beaten a length and a head in the Visitors’ Apprentices’ Handicap at Newmarket on October 3.

Przemysl was also Joseph's final ride, once more at Newmarket, when finishing sixth off 14 in the Bretby Stakes on May 2, 1917.

Altogether, Joseph had just five rides in public, all of them on horses owned by a Duke!

Joseph's second ride: Newmarket 19 July 1916.
