Paul Liddicoat rode over jumps for five seasons during the early 1980s and had three wins.
His first effort did not go well, for at Hereford on April 1, 1980, his mount, Ty-Pren, was behind when running out at the sixth flight in the Hay Novices’ Hurdle (Division 1). However, things went much better at Newton Abbot just six days later when Athens Star recorded a comfortable victory in the Brookside Selling Handicap Hurdle. Trained by Milton Bradley, with whose stable Paul was associated, the five-year-old romped home by eight lengths.
Paul had to wait until February 2, 1983 for a second victory, but come it eventually did, when Nunswalk, also trained by Milton Bradley, led nearly all the way and held off the challenge of Colin Price on Pin Tick to take the Ledbury Selling Handicap Hurdle at Hereford by three-quarters of a length.
He kept the ride when Nunswalk switched to fences and the very last race of the 1982/83 season saw them score again at Market Rasen on June 4 when taking the aptly-named Final Fling Novices’ Chase (Division 2). Luck may have been on their side as Spikey Bill, ridden by Micky Hammond, crashed out when leading at the last fence.
Having had over 50 rides that season it looked as though Paul was making progress. However, he had no further success, his final ride coming at Worcester on September 10, 1983 when Grey Dolphin finished third in the Coventry Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Chase.
