Whilst trying to free his mount from an entangled martingale, a 17-year-old apprentice jockey, Kenneth Lord, attached to J. R. Mason at Wold House, Malton, was kicked in the head by the horse and later died in hospital. The accident happened on Sunday 25 February 1940.
