Born on December 7, 1964, Richard Lines is the son of veteran former Newmarket trainer Cliff Lines, best known for having been Shergar’s work rider.
Richard initially rode in Australia as an apprentice in 1981 but returned to England following problems with his passport.
He rode his first British winner on Sovereign Paul, trained by Jimmy Fox, in the June Selling Stakes (Division 2) at Bath on June 11, 1983.
He rode successfully in Britain in the mid-1980s, winning three consecutive races at Windsor on July 30, 1984, all three were trained by Willie Hasting-Bass. He also won one on Hastings-Bass’s debutant Coup D’Hebe at Leicester on November 5, 1985.
Hastings-Bass was also responsible for Richard’s last win in England. This was on the favourite On Notice in the E.B.F. Leyburn Stakes at Catterick on July 23, 1987.
Richard rode a total of 40 winners in Britain between 1983 and 1987. He rode in Australia during the British winters before eventually returning down under full-time.
His major wins in Australia included the Journalists’ Plate at Randwick on C’est La Vie in 1988 for leading trainer Brian Mayfield-Smith.
He took out a trainer’s licence in Malaysia in 2002 and trained 16 winners there in his first season.
Richard went on to become champion trainer there for three successive years, 2011 to 2013. In 2011 he not only won the trainers’ championship but his horse Tears To Diamonds also won Horse Of The Year honours after winning five races in a row, culminating with a win in the Group 1 Penang Gold Cup.
