Charles Littleworth

1914-1977

Article by Alan Trout

Although Charles William Littleworth rode on the Flat for at least five seasons in the 1930s, his only winner was gained under National Hunt rules.

Born in 1914, he had his first ride in public when fourth of eight runners on King Finch in the Apprentices’ Plate at Bath on August 19, 1931. He had at least one ride each year until 1935 but made little impression.

His sole success came when Golden Cottage beat two rivals to take the Maiden Hurdle at Market Rasen on Easter Monday, April 18, 1938, for Spilsby, Lincolnshire-based owner-trainer Major Thomas Jessop. Charles regularly rode the six-year-old and had been placed on him on his last two starts. It was almost an even better afternoon for the jockey, for in the previous race he had been beaten a short head on Banishment in the Selling Chase.

He finished second twice on Golden Cottage before the 1937/38 campaign ended. However, despite holding a jump jockey’s licence for a further season, he rode no more winners.

Charles Littleworth died in 1977.
