Martin Lane

Born on October 10, 1985, flat jockey Martin Lane rode more than 430 winners in a career that began in 2009. He recorded a score of 28 wins in his first season. He was champion apprentice in 2010 with 52 winners, which included the 2010 John Smith’s Cup at York on Wigmore Hall for Michael Bell.

His biggest triumph came on David Simcock’s talented performer Skeikhzayedroad in the Grade 1 Northern Dancer Stakes at Woodbine in 2014. He also won the Group 2 Sky Bet York Stakes on that horse, and the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes on Breton Rock the same year.

He attracted a fair amount of attention when becoming Britain’s first bearded professional jockey in living memory.

Martin announced his retirement from the saddle after steering Charlie Appleby’s two-year-old filly Crown Walk to victory for Godolphin at Chelmsford on Friday, December 15, 2017.

He left the world of horse racing behind to take up a new career as operations manager in an island holiday resort in Fiji.
