Thomas Longworth

1876 -1938

Amateur rider Thomas James Longworth rode a total of 32 winners under National Hunt rules including the Cheltenham Grand Annual Chase.

He had his first ride under NH rules when finishing second on Popgun in the High Sheriff’s Steeplechase at the Llangibby & Tredegar fixture on November 26, 1896. The following month, Popgun provided him with his first visit to the winner’s enclosure when landing the Roath Steeplechase at Cardiff on Boxing Day 1896.

Thomas achieved his greatest success in the saddle on April 13, 1898 when winning Cheltenham’s Grand Annual Chase by a neck on 7-1 chance Xebec.

He enjoyed his most successful year numerically in 1902 with 10 winners, two of which were achieved during April on a horse named Four, landing the United Hunts Chase at Huntingdon and the Malvern Chase at Colwall Park.

Also in 1902, he had his only ride in the Grand National, completing the course last of the 11 finishers on 100-1 outsider Steady Glass.

Thomas rode his last winner when getting 6-4 on favourite Dutch Bill home by a neck in the Treehill Selling Chase at Devon & Exeter on August 30, 1905. He rode under NH rules until April 1906.

Twenty-four years later, by then in his mid-50s, Thomas came out of retirement – although he had presumably continued to ride in point-to-points after finishing under NH rules – to partner Theodora in the United Hunts’ Challenge Cup at Cheltenham’s National Hunt Meeting on March 11, 1930. They completed the course safely, albeit last of the six finishers, thus ending his brief, one-ride comeback.

Thomas Longworth died on April 1, 1938.
