Peter William Lawrence held a National Hunt jockey’s licence for four seasons between 1949 and 1953 but rode just one winner.
This came at Fontwell Park on Saturday, May 31, 1952, when his mount, the 5-1 chance Golden Fox II, won the Whitsun Handicap Hurdle, beating Mieuxce Cross, ridden by Johnny Gilbert, by three lengths. The five-year-old was not winning out of turn for Peter, for on the last three occasions he had ridden him – at Fontwell in March and at Towcester and Taunton in April – the combination had finished second.
Those four efforts on Golden Fox comprised almost half of the nine rides he had that season. Sadly, he did not keep the ride thereafter and did not add to his score, despite retaining his licence for a further year.
