Bill Lord served his apprenticeship in Britain but spent most of his riding career in Austria where he was champion jockey.

William Henry Lord was born on June 5, 1947 and started out in 1963 as an apprentice with Major Peter Nelson at Upper Lambourn before joining Reg Hollinshead’s Upper Longdon, Staffordshire stable in 1966. He rode his first winner on Friar Tuck, trained by Geordie Wallace, in a Catterick apprentices’ handicap on July 25, 1968.

He came out of his time in 1969 and rode as a professional jockey from 1970 to 1974. He rode just one winner during that time,25/1 outsider Eagle River in a Wolverhampton seller on November 6, 1974.

He then moved his tack to Austria where he enjoyed far greater success. As well as being champion jockey there, he won most of the country’s big races.

He finished second on My Admiral, trained at Newmarket by Chris Wall, in the 1990 Austrian Derby, won by a locally trained horse, Dzulio.
