Bob Lacey

On October 18, 1939, the Cambridgeshire Handicap was run in two classes. Both were over a straight mile on Newmarket’s July Course, the Rowley Mile being out of use due to the war.

The Class 2 race was won by 25-1 outsider Orichalque, the mount of Jimmy Simpson. The Class 1 version went to Gyroscope, trained by Harvey Leader and the mount of 16-year-old apprentice jockey Bob Lacey.

Lacey subsequently joined the RAF in World War Two as an air gunner. Sadly, he lost his life when shot down over Germany in January 1945.
