John (Piggy) Lawrence

Eldest son of Mr John Lawrence, of Llangibby Hounds fame, John Lawrence, familiarly known as Piggy, came to prominence when riding Tony Lumpkin to beat a large field in the 1864 Irish Grand Military. He followed this with wins in the Cork Grand National on The Don and, after an unsuccessful ride in the Grand National, the Liverpool Hunt Club at Hoylake, on Mockingbird.

He rode Golden Drop in the National Hunt Steeplechase of 1866, run that year at Crewkerne and won by Alec Goodman on the 6-4 favourite Shangarry, which won in a hack canter. Golden Drop finished a distant runner-up.

In the same year, he had better luck at Punchestown, winning the Kildare Hunt Cup and the Lightweight Military. He was luckier still in Scotland at the Renfrewshire Hunt Meeting, winning every race on the card.

Then, the following year, disaster. After winning seven races in one week he took the most terrible of falls from which he never fully recovered. He never rode again.
