Joseph Lyall

Joseph Lyall

1890-1968

Born in 1890, Joseph Arthur Lyall, known as Joe, was the least successful of the four Lyall brother who played an important part of the National Hunt scene for the first half of the 20th century. He started well with ten wins in 1911, which promised much for the future, but added only eight more before ending his career in 1919.

Born in 1890, he served his apprenticeship with his father, Joseph Godson Lyall, and had his first ride on the Flat when unplaced on an unnamed two-year-old in the Weston Selling Plate at Leicester on June 21, 1903. One of his brothers, George, finished down the field in the same race. After more unsuccessful rides on the Flat, Joe turned to the jumps and had his first ride at Market Rasen on the seven-year-old Wild Hermit, who finished unplaced in the Maiden Steeplechase on Easter Monday, April 1, 1907.

It was not until March 20, 1911, that he had his first success when Chassepot won the Ledbury Selling Hurdle at Colwall Park, scoring by one and a half lengths, with eldest brother Frank unplaced. He rode his second winner the following day at Leamington Spa and was on his way with ten wins in eleven weeks, including doubles at Southwell and the Norwich Hunt fixture at Hethersett. At the latter venue, he was still able to win the Selling Chase on Half-Time, despite having to remount after Half-Time had fallen.

However, progress thereafter was slow. He did have a ride in the 1914 Scottish Grand National at Bogside but finished unplaced on Shaun Ore. He presumably then put his riding career on hold to serve in World War One.

His last win came in unusual circumstances. He contested a match for the Selling Handicap Chase at Monmouth on October 22, 1919, and both his mount, Royal Visit, and his rival Q Boat, partnered by Mr M. Rimmington, refused. Eventually Joe got the 6-1 on favourite going, and they came home alone. His final ride was six days later, when he partnered Golden Song, who finished unplaced in the Cowthorpe Hurdle at Wetherby.

Joseph Lyall died in 1968. His winners were, in chronological order:
