During my personal project journey, I learned more in detail about the effects of climate change and how imperative it is that we take action against it. I developed a deeper understanding and appreciation for each individual biome and was able to learn about the power of effective scientific communication as an interdisciplinary skill.
I developed communicative skills within the medium of spoken word poetry and used them to effectively convey the urgency of change and call my audience to action. I was able to build more skills in visual communication through my videos. I also furthered my research skills to give my project comprehensive and exhaustive information about my chosen topic and thereby present the most effective message to my audience.
From a young age, I had been taught about the adverse effects of climate change and the necessity of changing our lifestyle in order to save our planet. Documentaries, articles and TV shows, that have expressed concerns about climate change sparked my interest on the topic. Through these documentaries and this media, I was able to find appreciation for nature and understand the reasons why we should conserve the environment. For this reason, I wanted to create a product relating to climate change because it is a global issue that I am passionate about and wish to make a difference in. I decided to use spoken word poetry as my medium, as I am well-versed in using poetry to express my ideas and thoughts, but spoken word would also provide a learning opportunity for me to try something new. I developed my natural curiosity and passion about climate change, creating this product from my interest and desire to know and do more about this topic, displaying the qualities of an inquirer.
During this process, I developed my thinking and my research skills. I collected an extensive amount of research, and based on my primary research and also learned how to extract valuable information and apply the same to my work. I found various techniques and organizers to better understand my work and sort it accordingly. Based on my research, I made inferences, brainstormed, generated ideas, and made connections between them. This also helped me develop my thinking skills, especially idea generation. After creating the poems, I realized how instrumental spoken word poetry can be in expressing ideas and how to use it to move audiences. As I wrote the poems, it became easier to arrive with rhyme schemes, literary devices and formulate ideas. I developed skills in using appropriate language and writing for my audience and purpose. I also used a range of communication, from speaking and writing to address my audience and accurately convey my ideas. Spoken word poetry, which I have never explored before, I discovered to be more enjoyable to create than normal poetry, and I also enjoy the performance aspect of it.
