I have worked on my research skills and learned concepts such as the basics of budgeting, prioritizing savings, credit-debt cycle traps, identity theft issues & safety and investing to create a product, with its main purpose to bridge the gender finance gap in our society by improving financial literacy levels of women. Through the process I have worked on my persuasive communication skills in developing an online course to promote financial literacy within the female audience.
I published a free online course on Udemy, a popular platform for online learning. Exploring concepts of financial literacy such as basics of budgeting, prioritizing savings, credit-debt cycle traps, identity theft issues and investing, in order to establish financial independence and bridge the gender finance gap, in the urban demographic of women. The 30 minutes course at a beginner level, is divided into three modules, with quizzes and an engaging storyline describing a young, relatable woman named ‘Maya’, making the course relatable to the target audience.
This personal project journey of mine focused more on the skill development aspect and the outcome of the skills I achieved was the published online course. I used to have a few misconceptions about research and treated it as if it was collecting information on a particular topic, or rearranging facts or establishing a report on a subject. All these points don't require research skills but what anyone can do in this day and age. Research originates from a question or idea and delving into all aspects of it, to come to a valid conclusion. As a part of my learning goal, where I learnt financial literacy topics, since this was a self directed learning process, to educate myself I had to rely on valuable and credible sources of information.
Furthermore, I have been familiar with communication skills in terms of either making a presentation or communicating through writing. However, when developing an online course it requires more than that, where persuasive communication is needed from reaching out to people to fill in your preliminary surveys to making them enroll in your course. I learnt how to deliver crisp and short messages to more than 100 people, persuading them to check out my course and enroll in the same. Empathizing with my audience helped me curate a product that was more appealing, at the end reaching out to
Thirdly, a major learning through the personal project journey was problem solving. Picking a topic such as gender inequality and delving into the financial aspect. When it comes to problem solving I learnt you can not cater to the whole general audience that could be facing this issue. Therefore choosing a demographic as urban women from the ages of 25-55 felt more viable to cater to.
Lastly, about the topic itself, I learned how to apply some financial skills in my life which can help me more in the future when I become a working professional. This is because, to be an independent decision maker is extremely important in the 21st century where gender equality is prominent and rising in action, learning financial skills is a must!
