I learnt how to write blogs and articles and the different formats and aspects that are needed to be taken into consideration. I improved on my literary and writing skills by taking online courses and writing and improving upon drafts for my articles. I also learnt about racism in sports and the prevalence of the issue, and how pioneering athletes overcame it and became the best in their sport.
I developed a blog on the topic of racism in sports and the stories of great pioneering athletes of colour and their struggles to move forward in their fields.Hence, the name of my blog “The Eboneer”, which is a combination of ‘ebony’ and ‘pioneer’. It contains a series of articles on athletes of colour from various different sports.
Throughout the project, I felt that my communication and research skills were most at use. This is because, especially when writing articles, you have to be able to communicate with an audience, both, verbally and through your writing. Listening to people, interacting with people and learning from people are things that are absolutely critical for such a project. The core of a blog as a project is being able to communicate ideas and thoughts using your writing. Something I could not do very well before starting this project, and had to constantly work on and develop throughout. And thus, I think that the skills that are most important to your product and your project, are the ones that you will inevitably end up developing the most. In my case, it was my communication skills. However, one skill that I think is universal and that you need for the project, regardless of which ones are the most important for your product, is time management skills. You have to be able to manage yourself effectively, and create enough time to work on your product, while balancing all other elements in your life. This was one thing I struggled with in the personal project, but eventually had to resolve because it was elemental to all parts of the project.
