Through the process of Personal Project, I learnt how to create a coffee table book from scratch. Through the help of sample layouts and books I learnt how to successfully create one myself and currently around 70 people have read my book. I learnt how to gather critical feedback on content, appeal and coherence of the book through surveys and this not only helped in improving the final outcome but also helped me identify my strengths and limitations as an author. I also learnt the importance of time management not only with regard to this project but also in life in general. I learnt that by prioritizing my tasks, I could ensure that I have enough time available to complete every project.
Through the process of Personal Project, I developed my linguistic and literary skills as through the process of researching, reading samples and writing my own book I developed and learned how to use language as a means of communication and to effectively engage a reader in the written content. I also developed my critical analysis skills and Research skills. While researching for topics for my book I had to gather and evaluate only the information that was relevant to my purpose and to effectively create reasonable and sound arguments if I chose a particular perspective on a topic. Furthermore, since this was the first time, I was creating a book I had to analyse a range of complex concepts and topics such as understanding the reasons for a particular landmark to be built, or how craftsmen of a particular art form were getting negatively affected in the modern world.
Through the process of Personal Project, I learnt that art and architecture co-exist and are complementary to each other, and that architecture is a form of art itself. Through the process of Personal Project, I learnt about this community known as the Manihar community that resides all over Rajasthan and specialize in making these bangles known as Lac bangles. Manihars have preserved the centuries-old heritage of making these bangles and the difficult art of making bangles has been passed down from generation to generation and for them it is very important to preserve the valuable skill and knowledge of making these bangles. I also learnt that an art form known as Phad painting which is a 700-year-old legacy passed down over generations within a single family. I learnt that this is a type of scroll painting that narrates elaborate religious stories of local deities and gods and that in the modern world, there is a need to promote such rich artistic traditions from the past. Their visual appeal aside, art forms like Phad preserve folklore and stories that have travelled through centuries and reflect India’s glorious and vibrant culture. Through the process of Personal Project, the IB learner profiles that I developed and practiced was being knowledgeable. This project gave me the opportunity to expand and widen my knowledge about art and architecture overall and specifically the different art forms and landmarks that are present in the city of Jaipur. I was able to widen my knowledge through research and background knowledge and this was a particularly enjoyable experience because I was able to learn new things about the place I grew up in and also there is something fascinating about finding things in research that you already know because of your experiences and family. I realized that while I already was quite knowledgeable about my culture and the city, this project gave me an opportunity to expand my knowledge and further understand the complexities of culture and of the city.
