I have learned to empathize, have an open mind, and listen to perspectives before criticizing actions. In a conceptual way, I have learned more about fast fashion and understood that I only had a borderline understanding when I started making my product. Through my secondary research, I delved deeper into fast fashion and that opened my eye to many different factors that affect certain actions taken by individuals.
I have developed my sewing skills during the course of making my product. When I started I had no experience in stitching, I learned everything from different types of stitches to different parts of a sewing machine through on-hand experience and the internet.
My personal project aimed to create sustainable clothing by recycling existing garments, this showcased my personal interest in sewing, fashion, and to impact myself and others to understand the dark side of fast fashion. I have been exposed to the textile industry from a young age, I have always wondered about the hard work and creativity that has gone into each piece of garment stitched by the workers. Growing up around hundreds of sewing equipment increased my curiosity and interest in them. To create 6 products without any prior experience on something I was passionate about seemed challenging. Through trial and error with my first sample piece, I was keen to start working on my main products. By developing and using the organizational and affective ATL skills helped me concentrate and be on track with my plan; it helped me surpass my procrastination. After creating the product I empathized with garment industry workers; I understood the precision, concentration and hard work put into each garment to have a perfect piece
