I learned more about the elements that contribute to a good story/poem, the ones that keep readers involved and interested in the plot without confusing them, or causing them to want to stop reading. I also gained a better understanding of mental illnesses (mainly in teens and young adults) as a whole, as a lot of research was required before I could actually begin writing any of the pieces.
The ATL skills I outlined at the beginning of this project are what I aimed to develop, and I would say I have succeeded in doing so. One of the main ATL skills I focused on was research, as I needed to first understand the mental illnesses and how they affect teens (based on age, gender, etc.) before I began writing. In terms of self-management, I organised my ideas and plots using mind-maps, which is something I have not done in the past, as self-management had become somewhat of a challenge for me, especially during the pandemic, with my lack of motivation to do any of the work I had assigned for me. This project really helped me get back into the swing of things, and organise both my life and my work
During the course of this personal project journey, I have explored the various ATL skills in varying depths based on my project’s requirements. For example, the writing process required very in-depth research, so much so that I enrolled in a psychology course, meant to help me in understanding just how mental illnesses work in different individuals. I then moved to self-management, because writing and developing five short stories and five poems requires a lot of time, effort, and organisation. I used mind-maps in order to outline plot points and characters (mainly those with the mental illness) to avoid repetition, or the chance that the story would lose its purpose. In terms of IB learner’s profiles, I went from believing my project would require me to be a communicator, to understanding that being knowledgeable and inquiring would be the two most important aspects of my personal project journey. When the project began, I was worried that more interaction between me and the target demographic would be required, and that I would need to put aside my disdain towards discussions and interviews aside in order to make it work. But upon moving a bit further into the process, it became clear to me that by researching and really involving myself in the message rather than the steps required to reach the goal, the entirety of my project would become much easier.
