Summer Is Here

I am happy to report that the Coldwater Conservation School, operated jointly by NJ DEP Division of Fish and Wildlife and the New Jersey Trout Unlimited State Council was a success again this year.Twenty eight students, ages 11 - 14, spent four days in the heart of trout country exploring cold water habitats through "hands on" conservation related activities.

Our chapter ran the fly tying classes for beginner and advanced tiers. Sue and I taught the beginners and guest tiers Kelly Butcha and Rich Thomas taught the advanced students. My thanks to several chapter members who assisted.

While it is the summer and we have no membership meetings and our local trout fishing is at least somewhat curtailed, please be reminded that we have several fun filled chapter related activities in July and August. We run the Jefferson Day Fishing Derby on Saturday, July 12 at the Weldon Road Fishing Education Pond in Jefferson Township from 1 - 3 PM. On August 4th, we will operate a booth at the Sussex County Fair, and we will have our chapter picnic on August 16th at Camp Mohican. All three events are lots of fun and I encourage all of you to join us.

Finally, with warm weather and warm, low water, please give the few remaining New Jersey trout a break. If you do fish , fish early in the morning or later in the evening. Minimize the time you “play” the fish and make sure you trout starts “going” when you release it back into the water.

Enjoy the summer,

Glen Zeeck
