Overhand Throw

Teaching Cues & Steps (PHE Canada, 2011)

1. Focus eyes on target - "Eyes on Target"
2. Rotate hips so that opposite shoulder is in line with the target or partner - "Side to Target"
3. Point opposite hand at the target - "Point"
4. Bend and hold dominant elbow back at shoulder height behind ear, making the shape of the capital letter L - "L"
5. Step forward with foot opposite of throwing arm - "Step Opposite"
6. Lead throw with elbow, follow through down and accross - "Check your pocket for change" or "Give your pocket a High-5"

Helpful Suggestions When Having Trouble (PHE Canada, 2011)

Not stepping opposite

• Use polly spots or something for the student to reach forward and step on.
• Place a piece of tape or a sticker on their "opposite" foot.

Stepping too short

• Use a string, line or polly spot and place it at the appropriate stepping distance for them to reach toward when throwing.

Not rotating hips toward target

• Use spots or a line to place feet on, in the appropriate direction.
