Velcro Oven Mitt

Uses

• Use this assistive device to practice throwing and catching skills as an alternative to playing catch with a baseball mitt and glove.
• This is a great skill for beginning and lower-skilled learners, as well as those who have trouble gripping objects.
• Practice these skills while using the appropriate throwing and catching cues.
• Make two of these so you and the learner can play together.
• Terms:
  • "Hook": the rough side of velcro
  • "Loop": the soft side of velcro

Construction Materials

• Oven Mitt (not too big for the learner)
• Velcro Strips
• Tennis Ball (or other velcro-style ball from this site)

Instructions for Constructions

1. Place velcro strips ("Hook" side) on the palm side of the glove. Cover as much area as you can.
2. Play with tennis ball or velcro-style ("Loop" side) ball.

Modifications of Equipment

• Take strips of velcro off as the learner becomes more successful to continue to challenge them.
  • Work toward only having a small amount of velcro in just the area around their palm and fingers.
• Tie a string or wristband around the wrist portion of the glove if it tends to slip off their hand easily.
