TRENTHAM SCHOOL STATEMENT OF INTENT
TE TIRITI O WAITANGI

RATIONALE
The school accepts its responsibility for endeavouring to fulfil the intent of Te Tiriti o Waitangi by valuing and reflecting New Zealand’s dual cultural heritage.
To enable students to understand, experience, and respect Tikanga Māori and Te Reo Māori.
To recognise cultural diversity within the classroom and the responsibility towards tangata whenua of Aotearoa.
To implement the principles (partnership, protection and participation) of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and to consider their implication in New Zealand society.
Tikanga Māori will be embodied within the Trentham School Curriculum.
Students will participate in Te Reo instruction, including basic greetings, farewells, instructions, and everyday phrases.
Teaching programmes will align with cultural competencies.
Staff development will support Te Reo Māori and cultural competencies. The Board, principal and staff will make every effort to model correct Māori pronunciation and protocol.
All staff will recognise the needs of Māori learners, which should include diverse ways of teaching, and provide a programme that meets the needs of all students.
Whānau community expertise will be integral to developing a shared knowledge of Tikanga and Te Reo Māori.
The school will provide a welcoming atmosphere for all whānau/caregivers and students by reflecting Māori culture.
