PURPOSES
To create a positive and welcoming learning environment.
To provide opportunities for students at all levels to develop research skills and use the information appropriately.
To foster the students’ love of reading by ensuring well selected materials are available and promoted.
To ensure students learn skills to find their way around the Library and select appropriate reading material.
To help provide teachers with material and some IT support in developing their learning programmes.
To provide opportunities and programmes for the development of students’ IT skills.
GUIDELINES
Information Literacy
The librarian consults with teaching staff to assist in the delivery of the school wide information literacy programme.
Service
The Principal provides leadership and support to the Librarian and Library Liaison for overall development of the library.
The Librarian is responsible for the day to day running of the Library and organising activities to promote the library with the support of the Library Liaison.
Job descriptions, performance appraisal and professional development will be available for library staff.
Student librarians and volunteer helpers will be trained and supervised to assist with the daily operations of the library
The Librarian will submit a budget proposal, outlining and supporting expenditure, to the Principal for consideration by the BOT.
The Librarian has financial responsibility for the library and is required to monitor and maintain spending within the allocated budget.
Access
A timetable will be drawn up to allow each class or hub time to exchange books, and participate in literacy based activities.
The Librarian will provide supervision during library lunchtime sessions with assistance from student librarians rostered for issuing, returning and tidying.
Resources will be readily available for issue by using the provided system of operation. This also includes resources of special interest to parents.
The Librarian will ensure that the library catalogue (OPAC) provides easy and accurate access to school-wide information resources.
Information Resources
A wide range of resources to support teaching and learning programmes will be purchased with priorities linked to the Trentham curriculum established in a buying plan.
ICT resources will be purchased for student use in the library and in other learning spaces.
Resources will be monitored to ensure that out of date or inappropriate materials are removed and updated.
The annual stock take will be carried out in accordance with Ministry of Education guidelines and all requested data provided to the Auditor.
Place
Trentham School will have a well maintained library with furniture and equipment that complies with health and safety regulations.
The environment will be welcoming, dynamic and supportive to the students’ learning and recreational needs.
