PURPOSES
By studying science students:
Develop an understanding of the world and the wider universe, built on current scientific theories.
Learn that science involves particular processes and ways of developing and organising knowledge and that these continue to evolve.
Use their current scientific knowledge and skills for problem solving and developing further knowledge.
Use scientific knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about the communication, application, and implications of science as these relate to their own lives and cultures and to the sustainability of the environment.
GUIDELINES
There will be a science focus at least once a year and coverage of all strands of the science curriculum will be considered over a cycle of 3 years. A balanced programme will be provided to ensure coverage of all strands of the national curriculum by following the school’s long-term plan – Nature of Science (Living World, Planet Earth and Beyond, Physical World, Material World).
Explicit teaching from the Nature of Science strand will be part of all science based units of work: understanding science, investigating in science, communicating in science, and participating and contributing.
A conceptual approach to planning, integrating the science strands, key competencies, values and other relevant curriculum areas, will provide a foundation for choosing a context.
Teachers will be responsible for the ongoing science programme in their classrooms and will ensure that the students are given opportunities to extend their experiences within or outside their immediate environment.
