GUIDELINES
The school is committed to a holistic approach when supporting children who are new learners of English.
Appropriate information is collected on enrolment to ensure correct placement of ELL students.
Every effort will be made to orientate students and create an inclusive environment for them to help manage their transition into a New Zealand setting.
The class teacher has the overall responsibility for ELL students in his/her class.
Class teachers will differentiate classroom programmes allowing students to participate.
MOE allocated funding will be used to support ELL and to purchase necessary resources. In class and/or withdrawal group teaching will be allocated to funded children, grouped by needs.
The planning for and delivery of in class and/or withdrawal programmes will be the responsibility of the English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teacher. The ESOL programme will be based on the English Language Intensive Programme, The English Language Learning Progressions and the New Zealand Curriculum.
Assessment forms are completed by classroom teachers in conjunction with the ELL teacher in July and November to ascertain funding eligibility.
Use of the first language will be encouraged and valued. The school will encourage all students to identify with, and take pride in their own cultural background and this will be reflected in the school and classroom environment.
