PURPOSE
To encourage students, whānau and staff to follow the guidelines of the Cancer Society during Terms 1 and 4, especially between 10am and 3pm in relation to the prevention of Melanoma.
To ensure students attending Trentham School are protected from harmful UV radiation from the sun.
To increase awareness of skin cancer risks among students, whānau and staff.
To promote strategies that encourage skin protection.
GUIDELINES
During Terms 1 and 4 students are required to wear a sunhat when they are outside (e.g. morning tea, lunch, sport, excursions and activities).
Students who do not have sun hats at school will sit in designated shaded areas - “No hat, no play”. Teachers will provide extra hats for students to borrow if appropriate.
Staff are expected (and adults assisting with outdoor activities are encouraged) to act as responsible role models by wearing hats and appropriate clothing for outdoor activities.
Parents/caregivers are expected to provide sun hats, SPF 30+ sunscreen and appropriate clothing. The school will have supplies for those students who do not have sunscreen.
SunSmart education and activities will be incorporated at all age levels when delivering the curriculum.
Outdoor activities will be rescheduled, whenever possible, to minimise sun exposure between 10am and 3pm
The school gazebo will be used at school events and interschool sporting events to provide extra shade for students.
Regularly publicise and reinforce the Sun Safety statement of intent in a positive way through newsletters, meetings, school activities
The school will work towards developing and improving existing shade, particularly in areas where students congregate.
