PURPOSES
Provide opportunities to develop students’ knowledge and understanding to participate in and contribute to human society by studying the four conceptual strands in the Social Sciences:
Identity, Culture and Organisation
Place and Environment
Continuity and Change
The Economic World
Develop students’ skills as they use the Social Inquiry approach to examine issues, ideas and themes.
GUIDELINES
1. Conceptual understanding will be supported when students are able to revisit concepts a number of times in a variety of contexts from the past, present, future and from within and beyond New Zealand.
2. Using a social inquiry approach students will:
Ask questions, gather information and background ideas, and examine relevant current issues;
Explore and analyse people’s values and perspectives;
Consider the ways in which people make decisions and participate in social action;
Reflect on and evaluate the understandings they have developed and the responses that may be required.
New Zealand history will be explicitly taught as part of the local curriculum.
