TRENTHAM SCHOOL STATEMENT OF INTENT
MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS

PURPOSES
Mathematics and Statistics education aims to:
Develop students’ skills, concepts, understandings, attitudes and values so they are able to participate in a mathematically inquiring community.
Support students to develop a variety of approaches/strategies to problem solve developing the ability to think and reason logically, and to communicate ideas.
Support students to use and understand mathematical language.
GUIDELINES
“Mathematics and Statistics in the New Zealand Curriculum” and “ Effective Pedagogy in Pāngarau/Mathematics: Best Evidence Synthesis Iteration (BES”)“The Number Framework” are the basis of Trentham School Mathematics and Statistics programmes.
Mathematics will take place ideally 4-5 times a week for one hour. Students will be placed in mixed ability flexible groupings .
Add numbering Years 1-2, 80% of the programme will be on the Number Strand
Years 3-4, 70% of the programme will be on the Number Strand
(if student is at stage 5 or above)
Years 5-6, 60% of the programme will on the Number Strand
(if student is at stage 5 or above)
In accordance with implementation plan guidelines, programmes will be enjoyable for students. They will be planned to meet individual needs and incorporate Māori and Pasifika cultural knowledge and skills.
Student’s performance and achievement will be monitored and raised by implementing quality planning, teaching and assessment. Student’s needs will be recorded on our Student Management System (eTap) through ongoing formative assessment.
Students will be actively involved in their learning, encouraged to communicate ideas and be provided with a variety of learning experiences and resources, including home participation. Mathematics and Statistics tasks will be rich in language, context and challenge.
Students will develop accuracy, efficiency and confidence in calculating mentally, on paper, with concrete materials and technology.
Target students will be front loaded to support engagement in Mathematics and Statistics lessons and allow acceleration of student achievement.
