PURPOSES
To consider all children expressing an interest in participating in school sports for selection to represent Trentham School in Interschool competitions.
To ensure that all participants have a safe and enjoyable sporting experience.
To promote fair play and sporting behaviour for both students and parents, and promote respect for teammates and opponents.
To foster pride in belonging to Trentham School by building team identity and showing GROW learner dispositions.
GUIDELINES
Where there is an excess of interest we have an open and fair criteria for selection of the students.
Where appropriate, players shall wear a team uniform.
The establishment and running of any school team will be carried out in consultation with the Sports Co-ordinator and/or the Principal as appropriate.
All those involved in Trentham School sports teams, including players, team officials and parents, must be familiar with and adhere to Trentham School’s code of conduct for sport teams. It must be signed and returned to school.
In the case of Saturday netball, the code of conduct laid down by Upper Hutt Junior Netball will apply at the discretion of the Principal. Violations of the code may lead to temporary or permanent exclusion from the team.
The Upper Valley Zone Code of Conduct for parents is to be distributed to supervisors of Interschool competitions and supporters if required.
The staff member in charge of our Interschool Sports Team(s) will ensure that all children and supervising parents are aware of the Schools expectations for behaviour both during games/events and as spectators.
If sponsorship is required, it will only be considered from reputable companies that do not promote unhealthy lifestyles and whose business and policies are considered by the Board of Trustees to be compatible with the goals and ethos of the school.
All sponsorship arrangements must be approved by the Board of Trustees.
CODE OF CONDUCT FOR SPORTS TEAMS
All coaches, parents and players are required to read and sign the form below and return it to school.
Coaches & Managers: I will …
Remember that children participate for fun.
Be reasonable with my demands on the players’ time, energy and enthusiasm.
Give each team member the same amount of attention and time.
Ensure that skill development and acquiring appropriate sports behaviour have priority over winning.
Role model personal respect for opponents, officials and opposing coaches. A coach needs to model the behaviours expected of a Trentham Kid.

Always be positive.
Parents & Supporters: I will ...
Help my child to arrive to trainings and games on time.
Demonstrate self discipline and ensure my sideline comments are always positive.
Ensure the comments of my fellow supporters or family are positive.
Support the coach and manager knowing he/she is doing his/her best for the team.
Always support officials and coaches by accepting their decisions and judgements.
Not give instructions to players - that is the coaches job.
Support my child to take their team commitment seriously.
Players: I will …
Play for fun!
Treat all adults (teachers, parents, coaches, umpires and managers) with respect and courtesy. Follow their instructions the first time.
Play hard and play fair. Represent Trentham School with pride.
Show excellent sportsmanship and support all my team members all of the time.
Not question the referee. I will accept the decisions made.
Look after team gear and uniforms.
Notify my coach or manager at the earliest possible time if I am unable to play a game or attend a practise.

STAFF SPORT COORDINATOR GUIDELINES
These guidelines will provide support for staff members responsible for coordinating sports team(s). This includes regular weekly sports (i.e. netball, miniball) and one off sporting competitions.
Prior to Competition:
Prepare a letter for the sporting competition advising parents of the date(s), location, transport, cost, student requirements, etc. (NB. Permission for trips in the Hutt Valley has been granted on enrolment for most students, so permission is not required. Parents just need to be informed of the details). If you require coaches and/or parent help, specify in the letter. This letter must be checked by the School Sports Coordinator before going home.
Call a meeting for students interested and give them a copy of the letter to take home. Ensure the office has a copy of the letter also.
A copy of the school Code of Conduct for Sports Teams must be given to all students joining regular weekly sports.
Organise enrolment forms and send in to the organisation running the competition.
Day Trip and RAMs forms filled in for any inter-school event run during school time. Ensure these are sighted by the School Sports Coordinator and given to the Principal.
Organise students into teams and organise coaches/managers for each team.
Ensure you have enough coaches and parent help. Inform these people with a letter accepting their offer of help and giving them any necessary information for the competition.
Ensure coaches are given a copy of the Guidelines for Sports Coaches.
Ensure any fees have been paid if applicable. See the schoolSport Coordinator about setting up Enrolmy login for managing payment if necessary.
Ensure that all parents and students have signed and returned the Code of Conduct.
Organise sports team uniforms if necessary with the staff member responsible for uniforms.
Organise any other sporting kits teams may require, i.e. balls, bibs.
Ensure first aid kids are ready for each team. These are to be issued to coaches/managers of regular weekly sports prior to any training starting.
During Competition:
Support coaches to organise an area within the school for training. Training will need to be cancelled if wet, as the hall is not available for any coaching after school.
Communicate with coaches/managers about how teams are going throughout the season.
Share the team’s successes, including the score, in the school notices the day after the game if possible, and in the fortnightly school newsletter.
Any complaints regarding students, coaches or parents of a team, must be investigated. See the school Sports Coordinator and/or Principal for support.
If possible, attend some games to show support to the children as well as coaches/managers. Possibly take photos to share in the newsletter.
Organise a team photo.
Post Competition:
Share students’ success with the school, during times such as a whole school or syndicate assembly.
Organise certificates for players.
Collect all uniforms back ensuring they are clean and ready to be returned to the uniform cupboard.
Collect first aid kits and any other kits issued to the team.
Organise a thank you card for the coach/manager. We have a school card you can use. Ensure they are invited to the helpers morning tea at the end of the year.
Thank you for taking responsibility for a sport at Trentham School!
GUIDELINES FOR SPORTS COACHES
Thank you for agreeing to coach one of our school sports teams! We know this takes commitment, patience and your time, so appreciate you taking on this role. These guidelines should help you understand your role as a coach of a regular weekly school sports team.
The Sports Coordinator of your code will provide you with the following prior to the start of the competition. These will need to be returned at the end of the competition.
List of team members and their contact details
Copy of the draw
Sports kit containing any equipment (if applicable)
First aid kit
Sports uniforms (if applicable) will be issued to players prior to the competition starting. Sports hoodies will no longer be organised through the school. If a team would like to seek sponsorship for hoodies or any other part of a team uniform, approval must first be given from the school BOT.
All players and their parents will be given a Code of Conduct for Sports Teams to read, sign and return to school. You can remind players of these expectations if/when required.
There is also a Code of Conduct for Coaches. Please read through the code so you understand the expectations.
See the Sports Coordinator to arrange a space, day and time for training. The hall is not available for training after school and on weekends due to YMCA After School Care and bookings for hall hire. Training will need to be cancelled if wet.
Any concerns with the competition must be shared with the Sports Coordinator, who will support you to deal with your concerns.
Share the team’s successes with the Sports Coordinator, including the score.
Please see the school Sports Coordinator if you have any questions throughout the competition.
Thanks again for your coaching assistance. We hope you enjoy working with our Trentham students.
