NAG 1: CURRICULUM
TRENTHAM SCHOOL STATEMENT OF INTENT
CLASS PLACEMENT
Reviewed by BOT – March 2021
Ratified by BOT – March 2021
Next review date – March 2024
PURPOSES
To clarify class placement of children throughout the school.
2. To cater for most children’s needs within their age/peer group.
Classification of students is based on the Ministry’s Years of School introduced in January 1996. It indicates the number of years of schooling that students have received and therefore does not necessarily relate to the academic level a child is working at.
Five year olds who begin attending school for the first time with a date of birth prior to July 1st will be classified as Year 1. Five year olds who begin attending school for the first time with a date of birth after July 1st of the school year will be classified as Year 0.
At the end of the enrolment year all students who started school in May, June or July will be classified on an individual basis based on academic, physical and social ability. This will be decided through discussion with parents/caregivers and teachers, held in September and October each year. Individuals may also be reviewed at the end of Year 2 in consultation with parents/caregivers.
The Ministry of Education requires that the year indicator of each child be increased by one at the start of each school year regardless of its placement within a school.
Most students who start school at 6 years will be given the same year level as the majority of students of the same age. This will be decided in consultation with parents/caregivers.
