GUIDELINES
At least 60% of units available annually are to be used as permanent units for allocating to the school’s leadership team and the balance for strategy leadership.
Two senior leadership positions will be designated Deputy (5 units) and Associate Principal (3 units) in order to provide a career structure and a training base for aspiring Principals. In addition, six middle leadership positions may be created (each 1 permanent and 1 fixed unit) to lead a Hub team.
Each year the balance of units available as fixed term units will be allocated at the discretion of Senior Leadership, to meet the school’s needs the following year.
Fixed term units will be assigned to teachers responsible for implementing the School’s Annual Plan or for assisting or meeting any other identified school needs.
Staff will be informed of and consulted about the fixed term units available.
Teachers who have already demonstrated leadership potential will be eligible to be considered in the first instance as unit holders. If required, applicants may need to submit a written application describing how leadership they have demonstrated, will be applied to the carrying out of the key leadership tasks in the relevant job description.
For the purpose of identifying teachers who have demonstrated leadership potential, the following will be applied:
‘Teacher leaders expand their areas of influence and improve their own skills as well as those of others.’ (Henderson, 2008)
The Principal will be responsible for informing the staff and Board about the final allocation of units.
All unit-holders will be required to carry out the key tasks in their job description.
